The newly released Rio+20 negotiation text by the host country Brazil is an attempt to "make all delegates a bit happy, and a bit unhappy" said Ambassador Luiz Alberto Figueiredo Machado, Executive Secretary of Brazil's National Commission for Rio+20. But at least for youth, it is making us very unhappy indeed! Civil society participation has been severely reduced, the Sustainable Development Council is off the table, UNEP is not receiving a coordinating role, and crucially the High-Level Representative for Sustainable Development and Future Generations has been deleted from the text.

EARTH DEBATES – FLAGSHIP EVENT SERIES IN PREPARATION OF RIO+20

London – 22nd February, 2012 – Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is a universal measure of a country’s economic activity and output, yet it takes no account of the appreciation or deprecation of a country’s building infrastructure, or of the condition of its natural resources and the ecosystem services provided by the environment, such as crop pollination. Furthermore, GDP provides no measure of the health, wealth, or wellbeing of a country’s population, or how these are distributed across society.

New York – 30^th January – Negotiations were held last week (25^th-27^th January) on the Zero Draft of the outcome document to be put before leaders at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD), also known as Rio+20, happening in Brazil 20-22 June 2012. This first round of negotiations have been extremely encouraging, with consensus emerging between developed and developing countries alike, as well as civil society, on the need for the greater urgency, ambition and detail required to use Rio+20 for the opportunity it presents.
