We face huge challenges over the coming twenty years due to the lack of funding for and implementation of Agenda 21 and the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation (JPoI).
Future generations will look at 1992 to 2012 as the irresponsible generation - the lost twenty years - when we could have put the foundations down for moving towards a more sustainable world.

Rio+20 discusses the creation of an "environmental WTO" |

The idea to create an United Nations environmental agency following the model of the World Trade Organization (WTO) or the International Labor Organization (ILO) is growing. The proposal to create the World Environment Organization (WEA) came from European Union and it is being discussed by France and Germany and can be one of the major achievements of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, Rio+20, in June, in Rio de Janeiro.

Following the release of the zero draft document for the Rio+20 conference, to take place in June 2012, the first round of informal negotiations was held on 25-27 January. Many participants called for a stronger focus on poverty eradication and gender issues in revisions of the summit’s outcome document.

New York – 30th January – Negotiations were held last week (25th-27th January) on the Zero Draft of the outcome document to be put before leaders at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD), also known as Rio+20, happening in Brazil 20-22 June 2012. This first round of negotiations have been extremely encouraging, with consensus emerging between developed and developing countries alike, as well as civil society, on the need for the greater urgency, ambition and detail required to use Rio+20 for the opportunity it presents.
